6 Tips On How Photographers Can Attract Attention Through Facebook

6 Tips On Attracting Attention Through Facebook

Living in the 21st century, we are most certainly aware of the social media giant known as Facebook. However, the question is, how can we as artists and business owners tap this resource to sell photos and prints online? As we all know, taking advantage of this platform is practically a necessity in today’s digital age. Here are a few simple, but often forgotten tips that small businesses without social media managers can forget to do when creating Facebook pages and campaigns for their photography storefronts.

1. Discounts

To kick things off, let’s talk about discounts. People love a bargain. Knowing that they were able to get more bang for their buck is something they take pride in. 20% off, 10% off, or even free shipping; these are all discounts that have been known to significantly increase revenue, and still allow most photographers to offset their expenses and printing costs. When announcing discounts on Facebook, be sure to offer the discount only to those who have already liked your page and are willing to receive notifications from your business on their news feed. Then give a teaser post telling them to click on a link to receive the discount, and show them the discount code and other details on the link they clicked.

2. Contests

The only thing people love more than finding a bargain is being declared a winner, and contests give them the opportunity to be just that. The thrill of winning is something everyone longs for, and even though the chances of becoming a winner are usually remote at best, people still have hope that it will be them all the same. There is a good reason why companies implement contests on Facebook. It’s because they work! When introducing these types of promotions through this platform, try to remember these two things: First, make contestants like your page to enter. This will allow you to reach out to this person in their feed in the future. Like many of these tips, increasing your reach and growing your fan base is what Facebook marketing is all about. Second, actually mention the winner. Many people feel they are being mislead and are becoming skeptical about Facebook contests as to whether or not there even are winners. By stating in the rules that the contest winner will be announced on Facebook, people will be more inclined to believe in the contest, regardless of whatever rules follow.

3. Promoting the Storefront

Your photo storefront is the gateway into which all sales are made. So whenever you can, be it on photos or simple text posts, try to add hyperlinks to your storefront from your Facebook page and from your personal photography website. This will create another avenue of advertising that can yield clicks by people just browsing your site and information. An important thing to remember when creating links back to your website is to switch up the wordplay. Often times people get too stuck in a rut and will only say the one line, “Click the link to see more!” Sure this is ok for a post here and there, but there are so many other ways to say the same thing without it becoming repetitive and boring. I know I am much more inclined to click on a link saying something that I do not find to be boring, and I am sure your clients feel the same!

4. Featured Photos

This is a great way to advertise your work and show the people what you are capable of doing. When posting, be sure to be consistent and post on a regular basis, but at the same time not too frequently. We suggest around a few posts per week to prevent overload, which will in turn cause your fan base to block your posts, or simply unlike you altogether. From here, be sure to link these photos and posts back to your website and storefront, and tell how your images can be purchased. Now if you are worried about people trying to steal your photos, a great way to combat this fear is to add a watermark to the photos you upload. This way, prospective clients will still get a general feel for your work, and you do not have to worry about others stealing your creations.

5. Tagging Clients

This is a truly simple concept, but so many people forget to do this. When you tag your clients, the photos you tag them in often appear on their friends’ timelines. Of course, the photos usually have to be approved by the clients themselves first, but the majority of the time, people enjoy being tagged in photos they paid for. And by having a client give permission to be tagged in a photo, it is almost the same as an endorsement for all their friends to see. This will entice others to click on the photos, which will convert to likes and in turn potential new clients.

6. Encouraging Sharable Content

Not every single piece of content that comes from your Facebook account has to be shoving product down the throats of your fans. Often times many businesses choose to promote amusing anecdotes and fun pieces of content relatable to their particular industry. This can come in the form of an article, blog, or image with a witty caption. Whatever method you choose, be sure it is sharable. The best way to think of these posts is, “If I saw this in my news feed, would I want to share it with my friends?” The real point of this content is to grow your fan base. So create content that you first would enjoy and then the fans will follow.

Selling photos and prints online is not always easy. But with proper implementation of these few social media tips, it may just be a little bit easier to promote your photography storefront. Since Facebook is a free application that can be utilized by businesses, what do you have to lose?
